Here at our dental office, Dr. Drew Hines understands just how important your smile’s appearance is for your self-esteem. Fortunately, he is well versed in a wide range of cosmetic dental solutions. One of the more common options is to cosmetically enhance your smile with dental veneers.
In some cases where a tooth has been compromised by thin tooth enamel or a previous cavity, there might not be enough original structure left to secure a dental veneer. This is when a porcelain dental crown comes in handy.
A porcelain crown is a near-perfect replica of the tooth enamel layer cast from a special dental-grade porcelain. It can be shaded to match the surrounding teeth.
To install a porcelain crown, your dentist will use a drill to remove the entire enamel layer of the tooth. This leaves behind a post-like abutment that encases the pulp and root of the tooth.
Your dentist will then take a detailed impression of the area, which will be sent to our professional dental lab. It will serve as a guide while the technicians meticulously create a porcelain tooth to replicate the original. Then your dentist will secure a temporary crown over the abutment to protect it.
When your new crown is ready, we will call you back in to have it installed. The temporary crown will be removed and your new crown will be cemented onto the abutment with a strong dental adhesive.
